Howell, Sr., the youngest of the eleven children born to Fielding Lewis and Betty Washington, was a favored nephew of George Washington who willed to him 1,300 acres of land on the Kanawha River, in West Virginia. Howell Lewis, Jr. was born July 10, 1808 in Culpepper County, VA to Howell Lewis, Sr. and Ellen Hackley Pollard.
Howell, Jr. was the seventh child of the eleven born to Howell Sr. and Ellen Pollard Lewis. He was four years old when Howell, Sr., moved his family to the inherited land in what became Mason County, West Virginia. On January 14, 1831, Howell, Jr., married Emily G. Burch in Mason County. He and Emily moved their young family to Henry County, Missouri and settled there, just north of Clinton, Missouri, in November of 1836. His homestead was located on the top of the rise north of the town of what was Lewis Station: a crossroad of two country roads. Lewis Station became a stopover place for travelers, who enjoyed some fine Virginia hospitality. Howell, Jr., remained in Henry County, Missouri, with the exception of a brief departure in 1849 to satisfy a touch of gold fever. However, after reaching New Mexico, Howell, Jr. decided to return to Missouri, where he lived out his remaining years. Howell, Jr. and Emily Lewis produced ten children. After Emily died on May 13, 1866, Howell, Jr. married Mary A. Barrett in 1872. Howell, Jr. led an active life and was blessed with good health until near his death on April 11, 1883.*

I recently had an opportunity to visit the small, rural Lewis Cemetery in Henry County, Missouri, where Deb and I viewed the graves of Howell Lewis, Jr., Emily Burch Lewis and a few of their children. Passing through Kansas City, Deb and I met and had lunch with Michael Frost, past president of the Lewis Family, and toured Kansas City with him before driving on to the Lewis Cemetery. If you are interested in visiting the Lewis Cemetery, the address is 351 NE 520th Rd., Calhoun, MO 65323. It is somewhat remote and overgrown, but GPS should get you there without much trouble.
