Howell, Sr., the youngest of the eleven children born to Fielding Lewis and Betty Washington, was a favored nephew of George Washington who willed to him 1,300 acres of land on the Kanawha River, in West Virginia. Howell Lewis, Jr. was born July 10, 1808 in Culpepper County, VA to Howell Lewis, Sr. and Ellen Hackley Pollard.
